Natural oxides pressed by hand — zero machines, zero kilns
Each tile cured for weeks — growing more beautiful with age

Every tile is shaped by hand using natural pigments — no two pieces are exactly alike.
Made with local sand, cement and oxide pigments. Zero electricity, zero kilns, zero emissions.
Cured for weeks, not minutes. These tiles age beautifully and outlast the homes they grace.
Choose from our patterns or co-create your own — the stencil tradition welcomes your imagination.
In our Tamil Nadu workshops, a master artisan carefully places a custom-crafted brass stencil into a steel frame. Liquid cement mixes, richly colored with premium natural oxide pigments, are hand-poured into each individual slot. With steady, practiced hands, the stencil is lifted, leaving behind a perfectly formed, vibrant mosaic pattern before the tile is pressed under a sheet of glass.
Unlike mass-produced ceramic or porcelain tiles that require baking in fossil-fuel burning kilns at over 1,200°C, Athangudi tiles are 100% cold-cured. We utilize local river sand, premium cement, and organic oxides. The tiles cure naturally under coconut leaf shade and in shallow water ponds over 21 days—resulting in zero fuel use, zero emissions, and a near-zero carbon footprint.
Every tile undergoes a rigorous 21-day hydration and shade-curing process, rendering the concrete incredibly dense and crack-resistant. Instead of synthetic glazes, the glass plate gives each tile a smooth sheen that naturally polishes and brightens over years of simple water mopping and walking. They actually grow more beautiful and rich with age.
Athangudi stencils are custom-welded brass stencils made to order. We collaborate with high-end interior designers and luxury architects globally to translate custom motifs, modern minimalist geometries, or traditional floral tapestries into custom stencils. Our palette of 12 natural oxide pigments lets you curate a floor unique to your heritage.
Athangudi tiles trace their origin to a small village in Sivaganga district, where Chettiar traders returning from the Far East commissioned local artisans to recreate the floors of Burmese mansions. The craft remained — quiet, exacting, beautiful.
At Pookal Creations we are custodians of that heritage. Our artisans are third-generation masters who still press each tile on a glass plate, hand-paint the patterns with brass stencils, and let the cement cure in cool shade for twenty-one days.
— The Pookal familyFlorals, geometry, mandalas — each pattern is a piece of South Indian visual memory, ready for your floor.
Each Athangudi tile is the slow result of practiced hands and patient time.
A brass stencil is laid on glass. Natural oxide pigments — ochre, indigo, terracotta — are poured by hand.
Local Athangudi river sand and cement are pressed atop the pattern, locking the colors forever into the surface.
The tile cures in cool shade for seven days, then submerged in water for fourteen more. No kilns. No heat.
Hand-polished to a soft sheen and packed tile-by-tile, each ready to begin its life in your home.
Thirty seconds. Four hundred years of tradition. See our artisans pour pigment, press the stencil, and lift a finished Athangudi tile from the glass — the same way it has been done in Sivaganga for generations.
We had my doubts about these Athangudi pookal tiles initially, but the final outcome is absolutely stunning. After seeing the results, our client now wants to lay these throughout the entire shop.
Purchased Athangudi tiles from Mr. Bharathi at Pookal Creation. Had a wonderful experience — the craftsmanship and warmth of the team is truly unmatched. Thanks so much!
The people were very friendly and guided us through making our own tiles. Me and my mom made 7–8 tiles — it was tough, but a genuinely wonderful experience. They patiently helped throughout.
We worked on a college project with Pookal Creations and everyone was very helpful and open to trying new things. Hoping more people collaborate and get a chance to visit this beautiful place.
